“Energy is the currency of the universe. When you “pay” attention to something, you buy the experience. So when you allow your consciousness to focus on someone or something that annoys you, you feed it your energy, and it reciprocates with the experience of being annoyed. Be selective in your focus because your attention feeds the energy of it and keeps it alive, not just within you, but in the collective consciousness as well.”
— Emily Maroutian
I found this some days ago, and suddenly it was like if something suddenly made click in my mind. How I’ve never thought it in that way, and how only when the representation was with something more concrete and symbolic like money or currency, something we all value more than we should, that was the moments that it manifested, becoming a more concrete concept and easier to digest.
I’ve always believed, related to this metaphor, that somehow what we are actually exchanging with our job is our time. Because time is the only limit source that we have and we can not get back, and it’s the investment we’ve made through our hours of studies, learnings, overnights working and investigating about the topics we need or we feel interested in. Similar to the napkin story of Picasso, in case you haven’t heard of it, here it is:
Picasso was at a Paris market when an admirer approached and asked if he could do a quick sketch on a paper napkin for her.
Picasso politely agreed, promptly created a drawing, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a million Francs.
The lady was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you five minutes to draw this!”
“No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years to draw this in five minutes.”
But then also I start thinking a little bit deeper about, since our real currency is not our money, and time is close enough but it’s not the source, in the end, all is just the result of our pure intentions. What we actually sell is our attention, which implies our time. Like how we earn money, and how our salary pays is with the time we invest on something on mutual interest, so it’s about the energy and attention behind the scenes.
It is even more abstract than time, it’s intentional energy + attention. So in the end the final result of the equation it’s our profits or losses in terms of emotional health, physical strength or assets that you earn. Where we apply energy and attention, is where we apply time, and is then, when we earn something out of all that formula.
As a salaried person, you buy things, with the money you get monthly from your work because of the time and daily dedication(8–12hours), which means that they pay you for the attention and energy you are applying during this time. So if you want to make your own business, your own entrepreneur you need to focus on your ideas, be constant, and persevere.
And sure all things take up the time it’s an inevitable cost which we can’t necessarily control. But we can control our energy and to what we put attention to. If it is purely and intentional, everything else will follow as a result of the universe, the time you invest, the problem you’ve solved, the economic state you want, the things you want to specialize in, the family you dream of, or even the place you want t olive.
It’s amazing just how valuable attention and energy are.
Be careful about what you put attention to, be diligent with your energy, because that would be the source of the time you will invest in the next 30 minutes, 2 hours, days, months, and your life resolutions.
